Vodka
Vodka is a card game similar to gin but with some rules quite the
opposite. The deck is shuffled and 10 cards are dealt
to each player. The 8 top cards of the talon are turned
over to start a pile. Each player in turn (with dealer last) may
take one or two cards from the top of the talon or pile or may
take the whole pile and then discard as many as taken to the pile
minus 1 (the hand becomes 1 card larger when taking the whole
pile). Unlike gin, instead of getting runs and flushes you want to
have no runs and no flushes and no matching number sets. When you
achieve this feat, you announce "Vodka" and discard face down. You
get get 20 points for Vodka and the point value for each card
"un-Vodka-ed" in the other players hands (aces are 1 and face
cards are 10). Before counting the other players hand they may
discard any cards that fit into the declarers hand that don't
"un-Vodka" that hand (if more than two are playing then the
discarding goes in the order of the deal). Runs and matches are 3
or more cards (of any suit) and flushes are 4 or more cards (of
any value), so a Vodka hand might be 12 45 788 10 QK, for instance
(note that a hand with 13 or more cards can never Vodka). Now the
the others might discard almost any card onto this Vodka hand
except for a 3, 6, 8 or J, resulting in less count or even 0 count
added to the Vodka 20. The first person to 101 points wins. Deal
and dealer pass clockwise.

Scribblage
Scribblage is a game like cribbage and a cribbage board is used to
keep score. The crib is called the scribble. Unlike cribbage,
where the goal is to get 15s and pairs and runs of three or more
in play or in the hand or crib, or flushes of 4 or more in the
hand and 5 in the crib, in Scribblage one aims for 7s and pairs
and flushes (of 3 in a hand and 4 in a scribble) but the runs are
are intermittent (like 13579) with Jacks 11, Queens 12, and Kings
13. Multiples of 7 also count with 1 point for 7, 2 for 14, 3 for
21 and 4 for 28 (or 5 for 35 or 6 for 42 in a hand or scribble).
Go is still at 31 (1 point for a Go and 2 points for an exact 31).
Unlike cribbage, each is dealt 4 cards and each discards one card
to the crib with a deck card added to make a scribble of 3 (when 2
are playing) or one blindly discarded by dealer (if 4 are
playing). Now, before play, the dealers RHO cuts the deck and
dealer takes the top card of the lower pack and places it on top
of the deck with a Jack giving dealer a point ("his scribs") as in
Cribbage. The dealers RHO opponent begins play, calling out any
score that results (i.e that's 1 for a 7, etc.). Three 7s in a row
is 9 points (3 for 21 and 6 for the 3 pairs). 2, 4, 6 is a run for
3 points. There are no muggins during play. At the start of play,
if the non-dealer has a card that matches the up card on the deck
he can call "Scribblage" if he cares to, in which case the deck is
cut again and a second card is placed up next to the pile and all
both are included in the hand and scrib count. This is repeated if
and for as long as the non-dealer turns over a matching card from
his hand (note that the match cards stay revealed and the dealer
may call for any one of them in play, giving the dealer an
advantage in play). His scrib in a hand is worth a point. The
cribbage board and pegs are used the same as in cribbage and
points can be awarded for corners or skunks as in cribbage. Deal
and dealer pass clockwise. |
