Yin and Yang
| The yin 陰 and yang 陽 are fundamental and complementary aspects of the human condition which are best when balanced in harmony. "Complementary" things are items or concepts that enhance or complete each other when combined, essentially working better together to create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. The yin and yang symbol (or taijitu) shows a balance between two opposites with a portion of the opposite element in each section. In Taoist metaphysics, distinctions between good and bad, along with other dichotomous moral judgments, are perceptual, not real; so, the duality of yin and yang is an indivisible whole. The compound yinyang 陰陽 means "yin and yang" or opposites. Details are provided below. I've always felt that complementary fundamentals come in threes as in colors (red, blue and green or magenta, cyan and yellow) so here let me discuss briefly the third aspect of yin and yang, namely the yong. The yong is the space between the hills, where the external world interacts with mind and body and has a fundamental impact on our beliefs and actions, making us more. The yin yang yong represents how opposing forces (yin and yang) interact and are balanced, potentially leading to a state of strength or power (yong). | |
